Glendon celebrates its 50th anniversary with a special designation under the French Language Services Act

At 50 years young, York University’s Glendon College is celebrating a special anniversary with the news that the Province of Ontario has recognized the Glendon campus as a French-language service provider through a partial designation granted to York University under the French Language Services Act.  Read Story.

York University’s bilingual Glendon campus community celebrated its partial designation as a French-language service provider under Ontario’s French Language Services Act in the presence of Minister Madeleine Meilleur and Dyane Adam, Canada’s former Official Languages Commissioner and former Glendon Principal. What trends can be discerned with regard to francophone migrations?  What opportunities lie ahead? This attempt to look forward from the past was one of the themes addressed in the celebrations of Glendon’s 50th anniversary. Read story.

The future of la francophonie

As part of its 50th anniversary celebrations, Glendon College organized a discussion day on la francophonie on Friday, December 4. Entitled “Québec-Ontario,” this conference set out to address the challenges and opportunities arising from 400 years of francophone immigration in the province. Read story.

The rapprochement between Ontario and Québec is just beginning

Fifteen years after the establishment of the Québec Studies Chair at York University’s Glendon campus, Québec and Ontario acknowledged their status as the “hard core” of Canadian federation. Starting under Jean Charest and Dalton McGuinty, and continuing under Philippe Couillard and Kathleen Wynne, these two large provinces have now formalized their political and economic co-operation through numerous meetings and agreements.  Read story.

 

Glendon College plans year of fêtes to celebrate 50 years

Though it opened in 1959 as the founding campus of York University, Glendon College grew to carve a unique identity among post-secondary institutions as a bilingual liberal arts school.  Read story.

Glendon’s 50th Anniversary Alumni Breakfast was held on March 23 in Lunik.  It was a huge success and the room was filled with Glendon Alumni who graduated in the 1960’s to recent graduates, as well as staff and faculty members.  View photos.
