PRESS RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The SOUTH MEETS THE NORTH at the Glendon Gallery

Miki Gingras and Patrick Dionne

Humanidad - Working Children

(Photography and video projection)

Opening Reception: Tuesday February 15th, 6:00 pm - 8:00pm

Artists' Talk: 5:30pm

TORONTO, January 14, 2011 – Glendon Gallery is pleased to present the artwork of Miki Gingras and Patrick Dionne from February 15 to March 24, in an exhibition titled Humanidad – Working Children. All are welcome to join a guided tour led by these committed and inspiring artists on Tuesday, February 15 at 5:30 p.m., followed by the opening reception at 6:00 p.m.

Quebecois artists Miki Gingras and Patrick Dionne expose the economic exploitation of working children through a set of photographic works created and modified using digital technology. The project involved four hundred young people, enabling them to discover the power of images and of the darkroom. The exhibit is the result of contemporary artistic research carried out using the “camera obscura” technique. The photos were taken in markets and bus stations, areas frequently visited by child workers.

The video projection presents a set of unedited images taken during the course of this five-year project throughout Nicaragua, accompanied by short sentences, written by these young child workers, about their situation and their vision of life.

This artwork represents a wakeup call to public consciousness, proving that art is an indisputably effective means of sparking reactions from the senses as well as the intellect, both of which are essential for launching the process of social change.
