Blobettes, plus
PRESS RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Blobettes, plus
Opening Reception: February 7, 5:00 - 8:00 pm
Glendon Gallery - February 7 to March 10, 2012
TORONTO, 23 janvier 2012 – Glendon Gallery presents from February 7th to March 20th, 2012, an exhibit by Ron Loranger titled “Blobettes, plus”. The opening reception will be held on Tuesday February 7th from 5 to 8 PM, in presence of the artist and the curator Marc Audette, and with the participation of performer Marc LeMyre, who will present a performance created for the exhibit at 5 pm & 7 pm. The collaboration between these two provocative artists will appeal to visitors curious about current trends in contemporary art. An event not to be missed.
The exhibit curator Marc Audette talks about Loranger’s artwork in these terms: “Ron Loranger has been combining ink drawings and watercolour for a number of years. The images in his drawings are drawn from different sources such as the television by means of his iPhone and the different social networks on the web. This practice allows him to capture digital images that he then transposes or retransposes onto his watercolours, according to need. His works are made up of fairly large blobs and of fragmented drawings set randomly on paper. The voluptuousness and viscosity of the pigments reveal a precise and laborious savoir-faire. The lines drawn in ink seem more akin to writing than to drawing. Yet on close observation we can detect animals, pieces of objects, and parts of landscapes. Drawings and blobs converge to form works of art at the confluence of plastic form and pictorial matter”.
The contribution of Marc LeMyre, poet and performer, to the exhibition project of visual artist Ron Loranger arose from a meeting between the two artists. LeMyre’s tools are words (stories) and images. He therefore wanted to work with performance material (performance art, sound poetry) by imagining narrative segments using the visual works created by Ron Loranger. Where Ron Loranger de-digitizes the images by stripping off the various layers that make media constructs of them, Marc LeMyre dresses the artist’s organic result in other layers of narrative and sound.
Curator biography
Active curator at the Glendon Gallery since 2001, Marc Audette had study at the University of Québec in Hull and earned a Masters in Visual Arts from York University. He presently teaches visual arts courses in the Multidisciplinary Studies Department at the Glendon campus. Recipient of a Chalmers Professional Development Grant in Visual Art, Audette exhibits in many art galleries.

Warehouse (les Jardins)
PRESS RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Warehouse (les Jardins)
Opening Reception: Tuesday October 25th, from 5:30 pm
TORONTO, October 17, 2011 – From October 25 to November 25, Glendon Gallery of York University is showing an installation composed of skulls, rags, boxes and paintings, titled Warehouse (les Jardins) by Guillaume Clermont, a young emerging artist from Quebec. The exhibition kicks off with the artist’s talk on Tuesday, October 25 at 5:30 p.m. and continues to 8:00 p.m., including a guided visit by curator Marc Audette.
Artist Info
Guillaume Clermont lives and works in Montreal. After graduating from the Université Laval and the École supérieure des beaux-arts of Marseille, he is pursuing Master’s Degree at UQÀM. His work has been presented in Montreal (Centre d’exposition Circa, Art Souterrain, Galerie Laroche/Joncas, Galerie Lilian Rodriguez), in Quebec City (Pan! Peinture 2, Non Maison 2) and in international locations including Warsaw, Marseille, Paris and Moscow. In 2008, he participated in an artist residency in Paris within the framework of Résidences Croisées France/Québec organized by Quartier Éphémère of Montreal. Last September, he took part in the Nantes-Montreal exchange initiated by the French association MPVite. Warehouse (les Jardins) is his first solo exhibition in Toronto.
Look at how this artist expresses his artwork: “Occasionally, claims are made about the end of painting or, more prophetically, its death. These recurrent prophecies have alternately brought about the dismissal, and the exaltation of the medium, disrupting existing means of thinking about painting, and, more broadly, image-making. Have we ever been as fully immersed in the flow of images as we are now, following the rise of the mass media, and in particular, the Internet? Thus submerged, are we not every day saturated with images?
Warehouse (les Jardins) proposes a critical take on the various discourses attributed to the contemporary image and its history. Set within the context of the Glendon Gallery, situated in an old manor of British architectural influence surrounded by its very own French garden and fountain, the exhibit engages with the Duchampian heritage of the 60’s and 70’s (Pop Art, minimalism and conceptual art) as well as archetypes drawn from the history of art (the painting, the skull, the fountain), in order to put forward a logic based on repeating motifs.
The spectator is thereby invited to wander through an installation that apparently has an incongruous and disorderly disposition, a true post-Warholian warehouse. Cardboards, boxes, fountains, paintings and skulls multiply and come apart within the space. Far from being arbitrary, these accumulations take part in the banality of the spectacle that they portray. This garden fantasy, as artificial as it may be, startles and contrasts with the abyss of the gallery’s white cube. The initial excess appears reassuring compared to the rigor and order imposed by the white walls of the gallery space. This begs the question: What remains?”

The colors of Peru
PRESS RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Pedro Caballero & Borkas: The Colors of Peru
Opening Reception: Tuesday September 27th, from 5:30 pm
TORONTO, September 1, 2011 – Glendon Gallery of York University is launching the first art exhibition of its upcoming new season with “The Colors of Peru,” from September 27 to October 15, 2011, introducing the work of Peruvian artists Pedro Caballero Perez and Borka Sattler.
The exhibition kicks off with a lecture delivered by the artists on Tuesday September 27 at 5:30 p.m. and continues to 9:00 p.m., including a guided visit of the works of art. The evening is also the official opening of the twentieth Festival of Words and Images, under the title “Renewed Presence”, in collaboration with ANTARES Publishing House of Spanish Culture and CCIE, directed by Margarita Feliciano, with the support of the Consulate General of Peru in Toronto. The exhibition is under the direction of Ottawa-based curator and project coordinator of Latin American Art Exhibitions Lilia Faulkner.
During the evening, Mexican violinist Paulina Derbez will also delight us with Four Visions, her latest piece. Her musical statement combines singing, staging and the music of her violin, her faithful companion in her world travels. Currently a member of the Ontario Philharmonic Orchestra, Paulina Derbez has performed in Japan, Colombia, France, Germany, Canada and Mexico, among others.
Borka Sattler
Following her studies at the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru, Sattler’s work has gained well-deserved recognition in North America and Europe. Sattler has lectured at Waterloo University, Queens University, Concordia University, University of Ottawa, University of Toronto, and Carleton University. She has also held exhibitions in galleries in New York, France, Italy, Chile, Germany, and Peru, among others.
Sattler’s paintings have been described as “blazing figures of large, plastic, linear articulations with a vibrant palette, at times dazzling. These paintings also reveal mythical beings with an evil touch and the violent influence they exert on the artist’s soul.”
Pedro Caballero
A native of Cajabamba, Peru, Pedro Caballero completed his studies at the Art School of Lima and continued to hone his artistic skills in France and Spain. His work is based on pre-Colombian iconography, in particular on those of the Paracas and Chacay cultures.
Caballero’s paintings have been presented throughout North America and Europe, as well as in China and Thailand. His work has been described as “representing the Inca cultural heritage, rich in symbols, mysteries and traditions, evoking the ancient world.”
