The Glendon Musical Ensemble Under the direction of Lucas Dixon and Sarah Gray presents Sounds of the Century: An Aural History February 9th – 11th, 2012 at 7:00pm Glendon Theatre 2275 Bayview Avenue (at Lawrence)

Mark your calendars because you will not want to miss out on “Sounds of the Century,” the Glendon Musical Ensemble's main performance of the 2011-2012 season! The group will perform a number of choral and instrumental pieces endeavouring to not only explore 100 years of rich musical tradition but also a century of history, of culture, and of our shared humanity. Our show begins in the decade after the turn of the century, just as the popularity of classical music is waning and the radio begins filling previously silent living rooms with fresh, new sounds broadcast live from thousands of miles away. As time passes, the sound of the music begins to change; by the 1960s, electric guitars replace choirs and muted trumpets as the preferred sound to be heard on a record player. Computers eventually make their way in to music, infusing the sounds of 1980s pop rock with synthesized beats and helping to create the fusion genres of the 1990s. Our show ends with a reminder of the vastness of history, and how short a century is in the span of human existence.

The Glendon Musical Ensemble is comprised of close to 40 singers and instrumentalists, uniting students, faculty, alumni and friends of Glendon who all share a common passion for music. Each year the programs focus on different aspects of our musical heritage. The Musical Ensemble was formed in 1999 with the support of the Office of Student Services, Artistic and Cultural Affairs of Glendon College.
