| For immediate release African Pub Night Toronto,
Monday, November 15, 2005 - On Friday October 22, 2004, the Great Lakes
Region of Africa Independent Study Committee (GLRAISC) held its first fundraising
event. The Glendon Campus Pub was the location of GLRAISC’s African
Pub Night, a night of African music and culture. With the pub colourfully decorated, the evening featured a variety of African music presented by two DJs from the Burundian and Rwandan community. Along with the music, Rwandese dancers performed a cultural dance, which ended with an invitation to all those who attended to join in and experience the African dance first hand. Those present were also able to sample African snacks and Tusker, an imported Kenyan beer. Many members of Toronto’s African community came out to enjoy the evening with us, from whom we received ringing endorsements for a job well done. The most encouraging aspect of the evening was the mingling and conversational exchange of Glendon students, committee members included, and our new friends from the African community, which resulted in better understanding on both sides. The
evening reinforced one of our committee’s main objectives, namely,
to bring about awareness of the representation of the Great Lakes Region
in the Greater Toronto Area. A positive response was a long list of new
volunteers for future fundraisers and the conference itself. We look forward to working with our new acquaintances for our next African Pub Night coming to you in the New Year! - 30 - Source: Patricia Di-Brigida Project Coordinator Tel : 416 846-5004 patriciadibrigida@gl.yorku.ca |
