Inform
It will endeavour to shed light on the misconceptions of
this region by touching on relevant points in the evolutions of the
countries in terms of politics, economics and social history, with
a particular emphasis on the current situation and the question of
peace and security.
Promote
The aim is to heighten the awareness of, not only the audience,
but of this society, of this generation, and of generations to come.
In the spirit of multiculturalism, the appreciation for this region
is influenced by the strong representation of its people, francophone
and anglophone, in the metropolitan community of Toronto; most importantly
York University’s Glendon College. To become conscious of their
prescence here in Canada and of the potential of this African region
is to begin to understand the role each of us may play in its development.
Strengthen
It will aspire to contribute to the consolidation of existing
relations between Canada and the countries of the Great Lakes Region,
signifying the broadening and strengthening of relations in lesser
reached regions. The conference in particular hopes to offer diverse
ideas and suggestions in support of the development of Canadian-Great
Lakes Region partnerships.
Reconcile
It will attempt to reveal what problems arose in the past,
how to resolve them and consequently propose how to make the future
more successful. It will seek to identify and agree on issues such
as development and the avenues for the assurance and maintenance of
security and stability for the region. Furthermore, it will try to
assess the role that the Great Lakes Region of Africa assumes in the
international community, and how it can carry out this role.
Unify
It will seek to make evident the voices of this community,
the voices of this generation, and the voices of the future. Ultimately,
when combined, these diverse and yet converging waves of political
and social tendencies can create one powerful, united voice.
