SPANISH (HISPANIC STUDIES)

Glendon Student Profile 2009-2010
Laura Azahar
Third-year student with a double major in Hispanic and French Studies; also completing requirements for a Spanish/English Translation Certificate

Stephanie FranklinWhy I chose to study Spanish and French at Glendon…

I have always loved languages and excelled at French in high school. Glendon’s bilingual environment seemed the perfect place for me to become more proficient in French, while also enhancing my Spanish knowledge. Studying at a bilingual university opens many doors in the job market, especially in Canada, where French is a definite asset.

What does studying at an internationally-focused campus mean to me…

Glendon’s international campus, with so many students from different parts of the world, provides a very rich experience and brings us closer to many cultures. Building on this multicultural experience, students are offered the possibility of studying abroad and of creating the contacts for working abroad in the future. My plan is to participate in an exchange program in Barcelona.

The highlights of my Glendon experience…

I love the campus, with its close proximity to the city centre and, at the same time, surrounded by nature. Learning in a smaller-class setting means that I can communicate with my professors every day, which allows me to feel that I’m not just a number. Also, coming from a performance background, I love the opportunity of participating in the various French theatrical productions that are showcased every year by the dramatic arts department.

My tips for students starting their first year at Glendon…

First year students need to give lots of thought to what they want to learn, because only then can they take full advantage of what the university has to offer. Until then, students can and should take a variety of courses from different streams of study, so that they can figure out what they like and what they are good at. In my experience, an important key to success is to start assignments as soon as they are given, because that provides us the time needed for really polishing the work, before handing it in.
