“Seeing comes before words,” once wrote John Berger. Yet, when it comes to public presentation we mostly rely on text. Using electronic slides, we often turn to default templates, mindlessly multiply bullet points and indulge in long textual excerpts set in small, Times New Roman typeface against white background. What would it involve instead to think and communicate with images? This introductory workshop explores the use of visual media –pictures, graphics, video– in slide show programs (PowerPoint, Keynote, Impress, Prezi) to improve and support a public presentation. Although the workshop stems from considerations about presentation in academic settings (teaching in a classroom, lecturing at a conference), it is meant for everyone, from prospective employees preparing an interview to students having to make an oral presentation or staff showcasing an annual report to their co-worker.
