Michael Hindley served as Member of the European Parliament from 1984 to 1999, serving as Vice-President of the External Economic Affairs Committee with Parliamentary responsibilities for scrutiny of the entire range of EU external bilateral and multilateral relations from 1989 to 1999. Before and after serving as MEP, he served as a Labour member in local and district Council roles in Lancashire. Since 1999 he is freelance adviser on EU relations, including many evaluation missions for the EU Commission to study the effectiveness of EU capacity building in foreign and trade ministries. Since 2008, he has acted as trade policy adviser to the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) writing reports inter alia on trade and sustainable development, agricultural trade, trade in strategic raw materials, and EU energy policy. He also regularly lectures at a range of universities and is Coordinator of the European Parliament to Campus program.
