“Milieudefensie and the Politics of the Environment” Wednesday August 4 @ 10:00 am – 11:00 am Sjoukje van Oosterhout is Policy Officer Climate and Energy at Milieudefensie (Friends of the Earth Netherlands). Van Oosterhout previously served as Dutch youth representative to the EU for two years, and stood as a candidate for GroenLinks in the 2019 European Parliament elections. According to Milieudefensie, there are “some significant changes on the horizon – certainly in this wealthy country of ours. Just think about our agricultural system and our roadways or how we heat our homes or consume electricity. If we want to prevent global warming from continuing along its present path, some significant changes will have to be instituted. This is also true for the pollution that Dutch companies are responsible for in other countries.” Milieudefensie recently successfully sued Shell in a Dutch court, a landmark decision ordering a company (rather than a government) to reduce its emissions (though Shell is appealing the ruling).
