Fulbright Canada recently announced a Call for Applications for its Canadian Scholar Awards 2021-2022 Program. This program strengthens binational collaborative research and promotes thoughtful public debate on topics that reflect the broad range of contemporary issues relevant to Canada, the United States and the relationship between the two countries. A summary is provided below.

 

Fulbright Canada Research Chairs Program

This program enables Canadian citizens who are exceptional scholars and/or experienced professionals to conduct research, develop collaborations, guest lecture and/or teach at select American universities and research centres, normally for one semester, though this may be extended to a full academic year. 

 

Value

The award ranges from US $25,000 to US$50,000.  Basic health insurance is also provided, along with visa services and on campus support. Enrichment opportunities are available through the Fulbright Mobility Initiative in Canada and the Outreach Lecturing Fund in the United States. Faculty sabbatical, leave-of-absence, or retirement pay may be used concurrently with Fulbright support.

 

Duration

4 – 9 months.  Awards typically begin in either September 2021 or January 2022

Traditional Fulbright Scholar Award

The awards are open to Canadian scholars in all fields and are designed to enable emerging and established scholars, post-doctoral researchers and experienced professionals to conduct research, teach or undertake a combination of both activities for one semester or a full academic year at any university or research centres of their choice in the United States. 

 

Value

US $12,500 for one semester (4 months), beginning in September 2021 or January 2022.  A Health Benefit Plan is also provided. Enrichment opportunities in the United States are available through the Outreach Lecturing Funds. Faculty sabbatical, leave-of-absence, or retirement pay may be used concurrently with Fulbright support.

Eligibility (for both programs)

Applicants must

  • Be CA citizen (Permanent residence is not sufficient) do not have dual US citizenship
  • Hold a Ph.D. or equivalent professional/terminal degree as appropriate.  Candidates outside academia (e.g., professionals, artists) with recognized professional standing and substantial professional accomplishments

Applicants who have resided abroad for five or more consecutive years in the six-year period preceding the application deadline are ineligible. A period of nine months or more during a calendar year constitutes a full year.

Full proposal due at ORS for full review Monday, November 2, 2020
Final proposal and fully signed ORS Checklist due at ORS for required review by 9:00 am Thursday, November 12, 2020
Full proposal due at agency Applications are completed online and must be submitted by 11:59pm, Saturday, November 15, 2020
