Collective altar for the Day of the Dead with the Department of Hispanic Studies
(November 2, 2022).– Students from various programs at Glendon contributed to the collective altar organized by the Spanish Resource Centre with the Department of Hispanic Studies. This year’s altar was dedicated to the many Indigenous children who endured the Canadian residential school system.
With candles, photographs, toys, school supplies, poems, flowers, and handwritten messages, staff members, students of Spanish and Hispanic Studies, and many others, decorated the altar to celebrate the Day of the Dead, a tradition officially recognized by UNESCO in 2003 as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
On the Day of the Dead, November 2nd, Professor María Constanza Guzmán, Chair of the Department of Hispanic Studies, welcomed attendees to a warm celebration at the Spanish Resource Centre, and Professors Shanna Lino and Alejandro Zamora explained the importance of this ancestral celebration. Students, staff, and all attendees were able to taste “pan de muerto”, the special bread for the occasion, and learned more about the main elements that compose the altar for the dead while practicing the Spanish language.
The colourful altar (“ofrenda”) can be seen at the Spanish Resource Centre, located at YH047.
