THE GLENDON SCHOOL OF TRANSLATION CONFERENCE SERIES

Crafting the literary translator: A discussion with Toronto-based Jessica Moore

For this talk, we present an interview with literary translator and author Jessica Moore. The questions, crafted by undergraduate students Catherine Coquerel, Violet Mount and Juna Lilaj (interviewer) will explore Moore’s path and process as a literary translator.

Jessica Moore’s mostrecent book, The Whole Singing Ocean (2020), plunges us into memory, magic, ecological grief and the true story of a boat school. Mend the Living, Jessica’s translation of the moving and unusual story of a heart transplant by French author Maylis de Kerangal, was nominated for the 2016 Man Booker International Prize and won the 2017 Wellcome Book Prize. Her collection of poems, Everything, now, has been called “a powerful journey through love and loss – serving, ultimately, to unsettle any notion of a boundary between them.” The book is partly a conversation with her translation of Turkana Boy, a poetic novel by Jean-François Beauchemin, for which she won a PEN America Translation Award.
