Donald Ipperciel (left)In a press release dated April 15, 2014, York University  President and Vice-Chancellor Mamdouh Shoukri announced the appointment of Professor Donald Ipperciel to the position of Principal of Glendon College. A committee formed by the President of the University recommended the appointment of Professor Ipperciel following an extensive national and international search. He took up his new post on July 1, 2014.

Prior to his appointment, Dr. Ipperciel was a Professor of Political Philosophy at the University of Alberta’s Campus Saint-Jean (CSJ), that university’s French-speaking Faculty. He began a full-time appointment at CSJ in 2000 and was promoted to Full Professor in 2008; he also became Assistant Dean at CSJ in 2012. His responsibilities in this key portfolio included budget management; professorial evaluations; media relations; government, community, inter-institutional and inter-Faculty relations; international collaborative initiatives; and strategic planning.

Professor Ipperciel holds a DEC in Pure and Applied Science from the Royal Military College, Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, a BA and MA in Philosophy from the University of Montreal, and a PhD in Philosophy from Ruprecht-Karls-Universität in Heidelberg, Germany. He is a specialist in contemporary German philosophy, with his recent research focusing on the theory of nationalism and the nation as well as on Canadian nationalism and multiculturalism. His research also explores issues related to teaching technology. Professor Ipperciel’s research contributions include more than 60 publications (books, chapters and articles), as well as presentations at more than 60 academic conferences in English, French and German.

Professor Ipperciel’s teaching skills have been twice recognized by CSJ’s Excellence in Teaching Award, and he is regarded as a leader in teaching technology. He has spearheaded a number of initiatives in blended learning, Moodle courses, language labs and smart classrooms. He has also supervised numerous graduate students over the past two decades. From 2002 to 2012, he held the Canada Research Chair in Political Philosophy and Canadian Studies at CSJ.

York University President and Vice-Chancellor Mamdouh Shoukri ended his announcement with an expression of his deep appreciation to Professor Kenneth McRoberts for his outstanding leadership at Glendon College for more than a decade. He also invited all members of the College and the University to congratulate and welcome the new Principal to Glendon
