Date: according to teachers’ preferences and needs
Location: virtual (Zoom)

The Glendon "Experts virtuels" project supports the existing network of remote courses taught by university experts to students in targeted high schools. The goal of this activity is to enrich teachers' lesson plans through interactive virtual workshops delivered by an expert in a specific field. York University's Glendon Campus offers approximately 20 virtual workshops in a variety of subject areas that meet the objectives articulated in the Ontario education curriculum.

Through this initiative, students in grades 10-12 will be able to develop their knowledge through various areas of expertise covering: financial literacy, environmental science, communications, and leadership skills, at your choice. In addition to the suggested topics, our experts are flexible and can deliver the interactive modules according to the availability of teachers and their students.

The Covid-19 pandemic has made it imperative for institutions to train students at a distance, and on an unprecedented scale. The development of an online pedagogical approach, capable of combining pedagogical and technological expertise in French, is a major challenge! Students in grades 10 to 12 from the three school boards in the South Central region are invited to take advantage of these interactive distance learning courses in the classroom with the support of their teachers.

You can choose from the following topics and workshops:

BIOLOGY

The objective of this interactive workshop is to learn techniques and skills related to bird identification by sight and sound in an urban environment.  Participants will develop general observational skills in biology and specific skills in ornithology (the scientific study of birds). The students will identify birds using birding apps, physical features (e.g., plumage markings), and their songs. The students will also learn to create their own field notebook.

                  MATHEMATICS

The motivation behind this project stems from the difficulties perceived by teachers and students with regard to mathematics. The main objective of this workshop is to demystify mathematics by examining a known concept: the Pythagorean theorem. Various activities are developed to achieve this goal. These activities will encourage participants to better understand this concept and learn more about mathematics. By better understanding the key elements of the Pythagorean Theorem, students will have the opportunity to become more comfortable learning mathematics, a subject that scares too many individuals.

                  MULTIDISCIPLINARY STUDIES

In this workshop, which is comprised of a series of 3 modules that are offered together, participants will learn to use art as a tool for social change. This workshop provides a practical introduction to using the arts, particularly music, as a social change vector for civil rights movements. Participants will develop critical thinking, will discover and analyze the role of music in the emancipation and affirmation of Black American communities in the struggle for civil rights in the United States, from the 60s to the current “Black Lives Matter” movement. After exploring various examples of the use of music to engage and after analyzing the composition and lyrics of an emblematic song of the civil rights movement in detail, participants will write their own song and create a visual representation to defend social justice, support a cause they hold dear to their heart and become agents for social change.

                      POLITICAL SCIENCE

There has long been an issue in Canada with political engagement. Much of this has to do with the fact that many Canadians are not introduced to the political process or to the basic concepts of politics in Canada. This workshop aims to change that in two separate ways, and there will be two main sections to the workshop. The first section will introduce the basic political concepts of what it means to be “left” or “right” and will describe the parties that currently hold seats in parliament. The second section will simulate a session of parliament, with the rules simplified for ease of understanding and for the fun of the participants.

                          PROJECT MANAGEMENT

The objective of this workshop is to teach participants how to apply project management skills to any project they have in their personal, educational, or professional lives. In this interactive workshop, students will gain an understanding of the key aspects of project management by discovering how to set goals, plan, identify and allocate resources. They will also work effectively as a team to maximise desired outcomes, and then reflect on the importance of proactive organisation. Fun is good, but organised fun is better.

Participants will conduct a classic psychology experiment, the Stroop test, and will learn how to formulate and verify the hypothesis with the assistance of the scientific method.

During this workshop, participants will use sociology to examine a familiar subject — oneself — from a new perspective. The objective is to familiarise participants with sociology as a field and some of its basic tenants, as well as to develop their ability to think critically about their position in society and the roles they play in different social settings. Participants will leave the workshop with a basic understanding of Erving Goffman’s dramaturgical approach, which argues that individual are essentially  “actors”  continuously performing “roles” to appeal and function within the settings and environments that they find themselves in.
