OCE/NSERC PARTNERSHIP – VOUCHER FOR INNOVATION AND PRODUCTIVITY (VIP) PROGRAM
Ontario Centres of Excellence (OCE) recently announced a new partnership stream with the Natural Science and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) relating to the Voucher for Innovation and Productivity (VIP) Program. This opportunity allows researchers to access NSERC (Alliance or Engage), Mitacs (Accelerate) and OCE (VIP) through a single application process. A summary is provided below.
Objectives
- To help companies develop, implement and commercialize technical innovations by supporting partnerships between Ontario’s industry and publicly funded post-secondary institutions
- To generate economic benefit for companies in Ontario (including job creation/retention, new revenue generation, investment attraction, cost savings, value chain development, in the short-to-medium term (e.g., within three years of project completion)

NSERC PromoScience Program – Call for Applications
The Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) has released a Call for Applications for the NSERC PromoScience Program. This program offers financial support for initiatives that promote the natural sciences and engineering to Canada’s young people, particularly to groups such as girls and Indigenous peoples that are under-represented in scientific and engineering careers.
Objective
To support hands-on learning experiences for young students and their science teachers. Grants may be used to cover improvements to program content or delivery, as well as for new programs and activities. Grants can also be used to cover operational costs such as salaries, travel, postage, materials and supplies, provided that they relate to the promotion of science and engineering.

SHASTRI COVID-19 PANDEMIC RESPONSE GRANT (SCPRG): CALL FOR INNOVATIVE SOLUTIONS
Objectives
- To conduct joint India-Canada research (virtually) from all domain of knowledge inclusive of STEM, Humanities & Social Sciences and Arts and provide solutions to deal with both the immediate and long-term effects of the global crisis in terms of building new devices, creating new knowledge, development of a vaccine, new methods of treatment & diagnosis, and ways of dealing with the socio-economic and psychosocial consequences of the outbreak, so as to address the urgency created by Covid-19.
- To build on the strengths of diverse and interdisciplinary teams of Indian and Canadian member institutions of SICI, of two or more researchers, to meet the assigned goals.

Objective
The objective of the Exploration stream is to support high-risk, high-reward and interdisciplinary research. It seeks to inspire projects that bring disciplines together in unexpected ways and from bold, innovative perspectives. With the Exploration stream, there is recognition that innovation often carries risk; proposals for high-risk research projects that have the potential to deliver game-changing impacts are strongly encouraged.
Exploration stream grants support projects that:
- bring disciplines together beyond traditional disciplinary or common interdisciplinary approaches;
- propose to explore something new, which might fail; and
- have the potential for significant impact.
Projects must be interdisciplinary. The nominated principal investigator and team members (if applicable) can be from any discipline, but the proposed research project must include elements from at least two different disciplines (as defined by a group-level classification based on the Canadian Research and Development Classification).

Up to $125,000 per year (including indirect costs)
Indirect Costs
Researchers must include 25% in indirect costs in their applications on top of the direct costs of research. The 25% of indirect costs will be used by the university to cover indirect costs driven by your project and will be managed as per the Research Support Fund under the SHARP budget model and will not be available to the applicants to spend.

Call for proposals-2020 Canada-China Initiatives Fund
The York Centre for Asian Research (YCAR) invites applications from York University faculty and graduate students for the 2020 Canada-China Initiatives Fund call for proposals.
Founded in 2019, the Canada-China Initiatives Fund (CCIF) was created to support scholarly exchanges and research on modern (i.e. post 1911) and contemporary China, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan and their global outreach or Canada-China linkages, or the experiences of the Chinese-Canadian community.
Fulbright Opportunities for Canadian Scholars in the US for academic year 2021/2022
Fulbright Canada Research Chairs Program
This program enables Canadian citizens who are exceptional scholars and/or experienced professionals to conduct research, develop collaborations, guest lecture and/or teach at select American universities and research centres, normally for one semester, though this may be extended to a full academic year.
The submission deadline to the agency is Sunday, November 15, 2020.
Value
The award ranges from US $25,000 to US$50,000. Basic health insurance is also provided, along with visa services and on campus support. Enrichment opportunities are available through the Fulbright Mobility Initiative in Canada and the Outreach Lecturing Fund in the United States. Faculty sabbatical, leave-of-absence, or retirement pay may be used concurrently with Fulbright support.

The Johns Hopkins Center for Alternatives to Animal Testing (CAAT) at the Bloomberg School of Public Health is soliciting projects to help accelerate the discovery of mechanisms, medicines and vaccines for coronaviruses. A summary is provided below.

GERDA HENKEL PRIZE
The Gerda Henkel Foundation’s Board of Trustees has invited individuals and institutions to nominate candidates for the Gerda Henkel Prize 2020. This Prize, valued at €100,000, recognizes outstanding researchers in the disciplines and funding areas supported by the Foundation (primarily historical humanities).
Both institutions and individuals may nominate candidates; however each institution or individual may nominate only one candidate. Note that self-nominations will not be accepted. Nominations must be received by the Gerda Henkel Foundation’s office by 17 January 2020.

Institutional Support for Nomination Development

Imperial Oil – University Research Awards Program
Objective
To encourage research at Canadian universities in areas of interest to Imperial Oil’s petroleum, petrochemical and energy resource development businesses. These areas include the fields of engineering, environmental, earth, chemical, and physical sciences.
Awards for specific research projects are made to full-time faculty members to support research work carried out by university students under their direction.
Value
Individual awards are normally available in amounts ranging from $10,000 to $25,000.

Awards are made for one year and may be renewed annually for a maximum tenure of three years.
