Job Title: Japanese Monitor 

Job Type: Full-time contract, 35 hours/week 

Salary: Starts from $17.00 + room and board

Location: Glendon Campus, York University

Employment Dates: May 13 to June 18, 2024*

Training Period: May 13 to May 17, 2024

Program Period: May 30 to June 18, 2024

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Facilitate communication – responsible for maintaining clear and effective communication (relaying messages, answering questions, providing feedback).
  • Build relationships – must encourage, establish and maintain relationships (understanding needs, expectations, and concerns).
  • Coordinate and facilitate fun and exciting on-and-off-campus socio-cultural activities.
  • Manage conflict – must be able to identify and resolve conflicts that may arise (negotiate and find solutions that are mutually beneficial).
  • Provide support (providing advice, guidance, and assistance in overcoming challenges).
  • Collaborate with teacher to support language training in classroom.

Other Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Escort participants on local trips.
  • Take part in administrative tasks.
  • Support participants in residence.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Eligible to work in Canada.
  • Proficient in Japanese and English (knowledge of French is an asset).
  • Valid police vulnerable sector check (for summer sessions only).
  • Has experience organising and/or leading group activities.
  • Familiar with the city of Toronto.

JOIN OUR TEAM

Glendon Continuing Education offers French and English as a Second Language programming all year round, including the Explore and Destination Clic programs during the spring and summer.

In partnership with Musashino Gakuin University (MGU) in Japan, we welcome their English as a  Second Language (ESL) learners to join Explore in the spring for a three-week immersion program. They will be taking part in and activities and trips with ESL Explore students and will be following a similar programming schedule.

As a Japanese monitor, your primary responsibility will be to act a liaison between the MGU students, their chaperone, and the Glendon Explore program. Your tasks include facilitate communications, cooperation, and collaboration between the two groups. 

*Possible contract extension for the following programs:

  • FSL and ESL for adults (19+): May 21 to June 22, 2024
  • FSL and ESL for teens (13-15): July 1 to July 19, 2024
  • FFL for teens (grades 8-10): July 1 to July 19, 2024
  • FSL and ESL for teens (13-15): July 22 to August 9, 2024
